SHAKESPEARE 101

101

SHAKESPEARE

with Teaching Artist Nick Hone

Week One: Script analysis and scansion. In this session, we will work through the ideas of scansion in Shakespearean plays and sonnets, with activities that exemplify when Scansion is most useful to the actor. Shakespeare monologues are assigned to the participants (can find their own or have me assign them) to be worked on in the next meeting

Week Two: All participants will perform their dramatic monologue and will get an individual work session and notes from myself and other participants. The focus will be on developing a character within the monologue, using the scansion to your benefit instead of letting it control you, and maintaining the narrative thread of the script.

Week Three: All participants will perform their comedic monologue and will get an individual work session and notes from myself and other participants. The focus will be on developing a character within the monologue, using the scansion to your benefit instead of letting it control you, and maintaining the narrative thread of the script.

Week Four: All participants perform their finished monologue packages and receive final notes. We then conclude with a discussion of Shakespeare’s legacy in western theatre, why his work is and isn’t worth producing anymore, and how we can use the framework of his plays to tell stories in a modern age.
